Philip in Samaria: A Layperson's Impact

May 24, 2026

Today we delve into Acts 8 to see how God uses everyday people like us to bring about significant change in the world. The story begins with Stephen's martyrdom and Saul’s subsequent persecution of Christians in Jerusalem.

The Spread Despite Persecution

In this passage, after Stephen was stoned for his faith, a wave of fear swept through the early Christian community. Acts 8:1 tells us that on that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

Despite the persecution, Philip didn't retreat into isolation but instead went down to Samaria where he proclaimed Jesus as Messiah.

The Ordinary Person's Role

Philip is a great example of how God uses ordinary people like us. He wasn’t one of the twelve apostles or even an elder; rather, Philip was simply someone who believed in Christ and was full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5).

In Samaria, Philip preached about Jesus, performed miracles, healed many sick people, and brought joy to those around him. This is where we see God using a lay person like Philip to advance His kingdom.

God's Use of Lay Individuals

The story also reminds us that even in the face of persecution, our faith can grow stronger. As believers, it’s important for us not only to hold onto our own convictions but also to share them with others.

This is why Philip’s actions are so inspiring: he didn’t let fear stop him from spreading the good news about Jesus Christ.
